Once a pitcher is locked in, his teammates follow suit, especially on defense. The game of baseball becomes rhythmic. Both teams pick up their pace of play and the game moves with little disturbance. The margin for error is far less since a start can be for naught if one mistake is made.
Baseball is an art form, where defense is meant to have a greater impact than offense. Instead of having 9 players in unison all focused on doing their part in securing an out. The lone player in the batter’s box dictates the pace of play and the eventual outcome. Once the batter takes over, the games slows down to a halt. Finally, homers are less exciting since they’re hit more frequently.
